Air Conditioner Removal in Vancouver
Taking a window air conditioner out for the winter is worth doing for reasons beyond tidiness: it stops the unit acting as a hole in your insulation for six months, and it keeps a machine full of water out of a freeze.
Seasonal removal and storage
A window unit sealed with foam and tape is still a substantial thermal weak point, and in a Vancouver winter it costs you heat continuously. It also leaves the sash unable to lock properly, which is a security consideration at ground level.
The other argument is the unit itself. Residual water in the base pan freezing and thawing through the winter is hard on the housing and the coil, and units left in place corrode faster. Removal takes minutes with two people and adds years to the machine.
Restoring the window and seal
The window comes back to full function: brackets off, the sash closing and locking properly, and the frame cleaned of the adhesive residue foam tape leaves behind. Old foam left in the track is what stops a window closing fully afterwards.
It is also the moment to look at the frame. Water gets behind an air conditioner over a season, and window sills and the paint below them are where the evidence shows. Catching rot or failed paint in October is far better than finding it next summer when the unit goes back in and hides it again.
Refrigerant disposal regulations
Air conditioners contain refrigerant, and refrigerant cannot legally go to landfill in Canada — it has to be recovered by someone certified to do it. That is why a dead unit cannot simply go out with household waste or into a scrap bin.
Metro Vancouver municipalities run appliance recycling programmes and designated depots that handle refrigerant-containing appliances correctly, and some retailers take the old unit when delivering a new one. Storing a unit over winter
Let it dry out before it goes away. Stand it somewhere it can drain for a day, because a unit boxed up wet grows mould in the coil and blower that you will smell the moment it runs next June.
Store it upright, the way it operates, rather than on its side or back — the compressor holds oil and laying it over lets that oil migrate where it should not be. If it must be tipped for transport, stand it upright for several hours before running it. Cover it against dust and keep it somewhere dry rather than on a garage floor.
