General Handyman

Handyman Service in Vancouver

Most of what we do is the list that never quite gets done — the door that sticks, the shelf that was never hung, the tap that drips. Book us by the hour or the half day and we work down the list in the order you want.

How our hourly and half-day rates work

We charge for time on site, billed from when we arrive. A half day covers roughly four working hours and a full day about eight, less a short break. There is a minimum callout because travel and setup cost the same whether the job takes twenty minutes or two hours, so if you only have one small task it is usually worth saving it up alongside a few others.

Materials are separate. If we can pick them up on the way we will, and we pass on what they cost. For anything that needs a specific part or finish, it is usually cheaper and faster if you buy it in advance — that way nothing is guessed.

What fits in a two-hour visit

A realistic two hours is roughly three to five small jobs. Hanging a mirror, fitting a set of cabinet handles, adjusting a couple of doors, sealing around a bath, and putting up a curtain rod would be a full and typical visit. What eats the time is not the work, it is access — moving furniture, finding studs in an unusual wall, and clearing up afterwards.

Jobs that sound small but are not: anything requiring a hole in tile, anything above a stairwell, and anything where the existing fixing has already failed and torn the wall. Mention these when you book so we bring the right kit and set aside enough time.

Building your punch list

Write everything down, including the jobs you assume are too small to mention. It is far more efficient to work through fifteen items in one visit than to call us back three times. Photos help — send them with your enquiry and we can tell you in advance what is straightforward and what needs a specialist.

We work in the order you set. If you are unsure, we will start with anything that is a safety issue, then anything that is getting worse if left, then the cosmetic items last.

Jobs that need a specialist instead

We will tell you plainly when something is outside what a handyman should do. In British Columbia, work on gas appliances requires a ticketed gas fitter, and most electrical and plumbing alterations require a certified tradesperson and often a permit. Structural changes need an engineer.

This is not us turning down work. It is that a handyman doing permit-gated work uninsured creates a problem you inherit when you sell the house. Where a job crosses that line, we say so and point you to who should do it.

What this costs

$290 minimum callout · $145/hr · $540 half day

Charged by time, not by task. Most lists of small jobs land between the two-hour minimum and a full day.

Materials are always separate from labour and passed on at cost. Quotes are free and written, and the full rate card is published rather than given out on request.

Common questions

What is your minimum callout in Vancouver?

Two hours at $145 an hour, so $290 for the visit. The minimum exists because travel and setup are the same cost regardless of job size — so it is usually worth grouping several small tasks into one visit and using the time you have already paid for.

How many small jobs fit into one visit?

Roughly three to five small jobs in two hours, though it depends far more on access than on the jobs themselves. Moving furniture, awkward heights and unusual wall types are what consume the time.

Do you bring your own materials?

We carry standard fixings, sealant and common hardware. Anything specific to your home — a particular finish, a matching part, a fixture you have chosen — is best bought in advance so nothing has to be guessed or substituted.
