Receiver and source switching
The receiver is the switchboard: every source goes into it and one cable goes out to the display, so switching inputs changes both picture and sound together. That is the arrangement worth having if there is more than one source, because the alternative is coordinating two remotes for every change.
The alternative — everything into the TV, audio back out over ARC — works and is simpler, with the limitation that the TV becomes the bottleneck for what formats can pass. For two sources and a soundbar it is entirely reasonable. For a projector, several sources and discrete speakers, a receiver is the right answer.
Speaker placement in open-plan rooms
Surround formats assume a seating position roughly centred between the speakers, and an open-plan condo often has a sofa against one wall with the kitchen behind it and nowhere for rear speakers to go. Run it with the room as you actually use it, microphone at ear height at the main seat, and the room quiet. Then check the results rather than accepting them blindly: correction sometimes sets speaker distances or levels oddly, and those are worth sanity-checking by hand afterwards.
Universal remote programming
A system with a receiver, a display and three sources becomes unusable if it takes four remotes. Getting HDMI-CEC working across the chain solves much of it; a universal remote with activity-based macros — one button for watch television, one for a film — solves the rest.
The measure of success is whether somebody who does not live there can turn it on and watch something. If they cannot, the system is not finished, however good it sounds. That handover is part of the job rather than an afterthought.
