Whether a new sink drops into your existing worktop or requires the worktop to be modified depends almost entirely on what the counter is made of — and the answer is very different for laminate than it is for stone.
Undermount vs. drop-in
A drop-in sits in the cutout with its rim resting on the counter surface. It is forgiving of an imperfect cutout, easy to replace, and the rim is the bit that collects crumbs and grime along its seal.
An undermount is fixed below the counter, so the worktop edge is exposed and you can sweep crumbs straight into the bowl. It looks better and it requires a counter material that can be finished and sealed at the cutout edge — stone, solid surface or quartz. Standard laminate cannot take an undermount, because the exposed particleboard core will swell the first time it gets wet.
Countertop cutout constraints
A new sink can be larger than the old one, because the cutout can be enlarged. It cannot easily be smaller: a sink whose rim does not cover the existing cutout leaves a gap that cannot be closed neatly.
On stone or quartz, enlarging a cutout is specialist work done with the right tooling and water, and there are limits — the strip of material in front of the sink is structurally significant and cutting too close to the edge risks cracking it, sometimes not immediately. Measure your existing cutout and compare it against the new sink's specified minimum before buying anything.
Reusing existing drain plumbing
Usually possible, and worth checking one thing first: bowl depth. A deeper sink sits lower, so the outlet drops relative to the trap and the waste arm below. Deep single-bowl sinks quite often need the trap reconfigured, and occasionally the branch itself needs to move.
Moving a waste pipe is altering the plumbing rather than maintaining it, and that goes to a licensed subcontractor. Swapping a sink and reconnecting to plumbing that stays where it is, is like-for-like work we do ourselves. Tell us the depth of the new bowl and we will tell you which of the two you are looking at.
Sealing and silicone cure time
The seal between sink and counter is what keeps water out of the cabinet, and it is one of the more consequential beads of silicone in a house. It wants a neutral-cure silicone rated for kitchens rather than a general-purpose or acrylic sealant, applied to surfaces that are clean and genuinely dry.
Then it needs to cure before it gets wet. Surface skin forms in under an hour; a full cure takes considerably longer, commonly around 24 hours depending on the product and the humidity. Using the sink that evening is what causes a seal to fail early, and the failure shows up months later as a swollen cabinet floor rather than as an obvious leak.

Performed by a licensed subcontractor at $185/hr with a two-hour minimum. Fixture swaps sit at the bottom of the range; re-piping a vanity or relocating a supply sits at the top. Permit-gated work is quoted separately.

Common questions
Can I switch from drop-in to undermount?
Only if your counter can take it — stone, quartz or solid surface can be finished and sealed at the cutout edge, standard laminate cannot, because the exposed core swells the moment it gets wet. On a suitable counter it is a genuine upgrade; on laminate the honest answer is no.
Will a new sink fit my existing cutout?
