Wi-Fi Router Setup in Vancouver

Wifi problems in Vancouver homes are usually building problems. Concrete towers and lath-and-plaster houses both attack a signal, in different ways, and no amount of buying a faster router fixes a wall the signal cannot get through.

Why concrete kills Wi-Fi

Reinforced concrete is close to the worst case: the mass absorbs the signal and the steel reinforcing mesh inside reflects what is left. A single concrete floor or shear wall can cost you more signal than a whole house of drywall.

Which is why a one-bedroom condo can have a dead bedroom while a much larger wood-framed house is covered by one router. The fix is not more power — transmit power is regulated and every router is close to the same limit anyway. It is getting an access point onto the far side of the concrete, ideally wired rather than relaying.

Plaster and lath in older homes

Pre-war Vancouver houses hide a genuine surprise: some lath-and-plaster walls were built over metal mesh rather than wooden lath, and metal mesh is an effective shield. Owners of these houses often blame the router when the wall is the problem.

The tell is a signal that drops sharply through one specific wall while others are fine, or a room that is dead while a further room is acceptable. Where that is happening, the answer is a second access point placed to reach the room through a doorway rather than through the wall — signals travel down halls far better than through mesh.

Mesh vs. extenders

An extender receives and rebroadcasts on the same radio, roughly halving throughput for everything connected to it, and typically creates a second network name you must switch between manually. It is the cheap option and it behaves like one.

A mesh system uses several coordinated units under one network name, with your device handing off between them as you move. If any unit can be connected back to the main one with an ethernet cable, do that — a wired backhaul removes the main weakness of mesh entirely and is far and away the biggest single improvement available in most homes.

Channel selection in dense buildings

In a tower you are competing with everyone else's wifi. The 2.4GHz band has only three genuinely non-overlapping channels, and in a dense building all three are usually occupied — which is why 2.4GHz can be unusable at peak evening hours in a downtown condo.

The 5GHz band has far more channels and much less penetration, which in an apartment is a benefit: your neighbours' signals do not reach you either. The practical setup is 5GHz for everything capable of it, and a 2.4GHz network kept available for the smart home devices that require it. Router placement beats channel tuning — central, high, out in the open, not in a cupboard beside the electrical panel.
