A guard is not decorative trim — it is a structural element expected to resist someone falling against it. Almost every failure we see is the same one: the posts were attached in a way that cannot resist being pushed sideways.

Post attachment methods

The weak method, and the common one, is a post bolted to the outside face of the rim joist with a couple of lag screws. That connection relies on the screws in withdrawal — precisely the direction they are worst at — and it loosens progressively every time somebody leans on the rail.

The sound methods put the post inside the frame, through-bolted with proper hardware and blocking, or use a purpose-made tension connector designed for the load path. Both spread the force into the deck structure rather than concentrating it on two screws in end grain.

Lateral load and blocking

The load a guard must resist is horizontal — a person falling or leaning against it — and that force tries to rotate the post out of the deck. Blocking between joists behind the post is what converts that rotation into a force the frame can take.

Without blocking, even a well-bolted post levers against a single joist, which flexes and eventually splits. This is invisible from above: a railing can look solid and be attached to a joist that is quietly cracking. If a railing has any movement at all when you push it firmly, that is worth looking at under the deck.

Wood, aluminum, glass and cable

Wood is cheapest, matches most decks, and needs maintenance. Aluminium is low-maintenance, holds up well in our damp, and looks contemporary. Glass keeps a view and costs the most, with hardware that needs to suit the exposure. Cable is popular and has a specific pitfall.

Horizontal cable railings must be tensioned properly and spaced correctly, because slack cable opens gaps that a child can pass through. Horizontal elements are also climbable, which is a consideration in itself with young children. Whatever the infill, it has to meet the code limit on gap size — a specified sphere must not pass through.

Height triggers for guards

A guard becomes required once the walking surface is more than a defined height above the ground below, and the required guard height itself increases at greater drops. Those thresholds are set by the BC Building Code and differ between conditions.
