Light Switch Installation in Vancouver
Switches look identical from the front and are not the same behind. What is in the box — how many wires, whether one of them is a neutral, and whether the light is switched from more than one place — decides what can be fitted.
Three-way and four-way circuits
A light controlled from two places uses a pair of three-way switches, which have no fixed on and off position — the position of each depends on the other. Add a third control point and a four-way switch goes between them. Hallways, staircases and rooms with two doors are the usual cases.
This matters when replacing a switch, because a standard single-pole switch will not work in a three-way circuit and a three-way will not behave correctly in a single-pole one. Count the control points for the light before buying anything, and note that smart switches in multi-way circuits need a matched set rather than a single unit.
Does your box have a neutral?
Traditional switch wiring often ran only the switched conductor to the switch, with the neutral connected at the fixture — the switch simply interrupted the line. That works perfectly for a mechanical switch, which needs no power itself.
Anything with electronics — a smart switch, most dimmers, a timer, an occupancy sensor — needs power continuously, and without a neutral in the box it has nowhere to get it. This is the single most common obstacle to smart switch retrofits in older Vancouver homes, and it is the first thing to establish.
Dimmer load ratings
Dimmers are rated for a maximum load and for the type of load. Switching to LED cuts the wattage dramatically, and an old dimmer designed for incandescent lamps expects far more current than LEDs draw — the result is flickering, buzzing, and a usable range of only part of the travel.
The fix is a dimmer rated for LED and, ideally, one whose manufacturer lists your specific bulbs as compatible. Also check the bulbs are dimmable at all: many LEDs are not, and a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer flickers, runs hot and fails early.
Smart switch retrofit requirements
Three things to check: a neutral in the box, physical depth for a device that is deeper than a mechanical switch, and whether the circuit is multi-way. Older boxes are frequently shallow, and a smart switch plus existing conductors can be genuinely difficult to fit back in.
Where there is no neutral, options exist — some switches work without one within limits, or a smart bulb approach avoids the switch entirely — but each has tradeoffs worth understanding before buying. All the switch work itself goes to a licensed subcontractor; we handle the making good afterwards.

Performed by a licensed subcontractor, who pulls any permit under their own licence. Device and fixture replacement is a minimum-callout job. New circuits, dedicated runs and anything involving the panel are quoted individually and may carry a permit cost on top.

Why does one light have two switches?
