Adding an outlet looks like the simplest electrical job there is, and it raises the two questions that matter most: what protection does this location require, and does the circuit you are joining have anything left to give.

Where GFCI is required by code

Ground fault protection is required wherever water and electricity are likely to meet — bathrooms, kitchen counter receptacles, outdoors, garages, unfinished basements and near sinks generally. A GFCI monitors the current going out against the current coming back and cuts in milliseconds when the difference suggests it is passing through a person.

The specific list has expanded over successive editions of the Canadian Electrical Code, so an older home lawfully wired at the time may not match current requirements. That is not automatically a violation, but when a circuit is altered the current rules apply to the work. The licensed subcontractor confirms what applies to your specific job.

AFCI protection rules

Arc fault protection addresses a different hazard: arcing from damaged cable, loose terminations or a pinched wire behind a wall, which produces heat without drawing enough current to trip a conventional breaker. That is a fire risk rather than a shock risk.

AFCI requirements now cover most branch circuits in dwellings, which is why modern panels look different from older ones. A common complaint is nuisance tripping after an upgrade — usually a genuine wiring fault the old breaker never noticed, or an appliance with a noisy motor. Either way it wants investigating rather than swapping the breaker for a plain one.

Checking circuit capacity first

An outlet is not free. It shares whatever circuit it joins, and older homes commonly have far fewer circuits than the number of things we now plug in. Adding a receptacle to a kitchen circuit already carrying a microwave and a kettle produces a breaker that trips at breakfast.

The check is a load assessment rather than counting outlets, and where a circuit is already near its limit the answer is a new circuit from the panel — which is a bigger job and may raise the panel capacity question. Better to find that out at quoting than after the work.

Adding vs. replacing a receptacle

Replacing a damaged or ungrounded receptacle like-for-like is the simpler case. Extending a circuit to a new location is altering the installation, which brings permits and current-code requirements into play.

All of it is performed by a licensed subcontractor — we do not hold an electrical contractor licence and do not do this work ourselves. What we handle is the surrounding trades: opening and making good the wall, patching, sanding and painting so the finished job does not look like a repair.

Performed by a licensed subcontractor, who pulls any permit under their own licence. Device and fixture replacement is a minimum-callout job. New circuits, dedicated runs and anything involving the panel are quoted individually and may carry a permit cost on top.

Why does my GFCI keep tripping?

Either it is doing its job or it has failed. Genuine causes include moisture in an exterior box, a faulty appliance downstream, or a damaged cable. Unplug everything on the circuit and reset it — if it holds, reintroduce items one at a time. Repeated tripping with nothing plugged in needs investigating rather than replacing.

Can an outlet be added to an existing circuit?

Often, but it needs a load assessment first rather than a count of existing outlets. Older homes have far fewer circuits than modern usage assumes, and adding to a loaded kitchen circuit gets you a breaker that trips at breakfast. Where the circuit is full, a new one from the panel is the answer.
