Fridges give you one useful diagnostic for free: is it running? A fridge that is warm and silent has a different set of causes from one that is warm and running constantly, and that single observation narrows it enormously.

Not cooling: first checks

Warm and running usually means airflow or heat rejection. Check the condenser coils at the back or underneath — a thick felt of dust there stops the fridge shedding heat, and it is the single most common cause of poor cooling. Vacuum them. Check the gap around the appliance too, since a fridge pushed hard into a cabinet cannot breathe.

Warm and silent points at power, the thermostat or the compressor start components. Before assuming the worst, confirm the outlet works — a tripped GFCI or a switched socket accounts for more dead fridges than people expect, and it is embarrassing to pay for a diagnosis that finds it.

Sealed system failures

The sealed system is the compressor, condenser, evaporator and the refrigerant between them. When it fails — a leak, or a dead compressor — the repair requires refrigerant recovery and recharge by a certified technician and costs a substantial fraction of a new appliance.

On a fridge over about ten years old, that is usually where the conversation ends. Newer units run considerably more efficiently, and a fridge runs continuously for its whole life, so the efficiency difference is real money. We will tell you when you are in this territory rather than charging you to arrive at it slowly.

Ice maker and water line faults

Ice makers are the least reliable part of most fridges. Common faults are a frozen fill tube, a failed inlet valve, or a saddle valve on the supply line that has partially closed or clogged — that last one being a fitting many plumbers dislike for exactly this reason.

A water line that has frozen at the fill tube is often fixable with patience and warm air. If your dispenser water is slow and the ice is small and hollow, that is a supply restriction rather than a mechanical fault, and it is worth checking the shut-off and the line before condemning the ice maker itself.

Door seals and frost build-up

Test a door seal with a banknote: close it in the door and pull. Firm resistance all the way round is good; a note that slides out easily marks a spot where the seal has failed. Warm moist air leaking in is what produces frost build-up in a freezer.

Frost in a frost-free freezer means the defrost cycle is not working — a heater, thermostat or control fault — and it is worth fixing, because the ice progressively blocks the evaporator until the fridge section stops cooling too. Frost only around the door is a seal problem instead, and that is the cheaper of the two.

My fridge is warm but running — what's wrong?

Most often the condenser coils are choked with dust so the appliance cannot shed heat — check the back or underneath and vacuum them. Then check it has room to breathe rather than being jammed into a cabinet. Warm and *silent* is a different problem: confirm the outlet is live before anything else, since a tripped GFCI is a common culprit.

Is a compressor failure worth fixing?

Rarely, past about ten years old. It is a sealed-system repair needing certified refrigerant handling and it costs a large fraction of a new appliance — and a fridge runs continuously, so the efficiency gap with a modern unit is real money every month. We will say so upfront rather than charging you to reach that conclusion slowly.

Why is my freezer icing up?

If frost is general, the defrost cycle has failed — a heater, thermostat or control fault — and it is worth fixing before the ice blocks the evaporator and the fridge section stops cooling too. If frost is only near the door, it is a seal problem. Test the seal by closing a banknote in the door and pulling.
