Window Blind Installation in Vancouver
Blinds are the most-fitted window covering and the one with an actual safety regulation attached. Canada restricted hazardous cords on window coverings, which is why the blinds you buy now work differently from the ones already in your house.
Bracket placement and depth
Every blind has a minimum recess depth for the headrail to sit inside the opening, and a further depth for a fully recessed look where nothing projects past the trim. Check both against your recess before ordering, because a headrail that will not fit is not adjustable.
Brackets go into something solid — the window frame or the structure around it, not into loose trim or plaster alone. On wide blinds a centre support bracket is included and is not optional: without it a long headrail bows, the slats bind and the mechanism wears unevenly.
Cordless child safety standards
Corded window coverings have caused strangulation deaths of young children, and Canada brought in regulations restricting hazardous cords on window coverings offered for sale. In practice that is why new blinds are cordless, or have cords short enough and inaccessible enough to fall within the requirements.
The important point for households: the regulations apply to what may be sold, not retroactively to what is already hanging in your home. If you have older corded blinds and small children, replacing them is worth doing — and in the meantime, cords should be tied up out of reach and cots and furniture kept away from windows.
Blinds in concrete and tile surrounds
A concrete surround — common in condos — means masonry anchors and a hammer drill. It holds extremely well, and there is no second chance at the position, so bracket placement is marked and agreed before the first hole.
Tiled reveals, common in bathrooms and kitchens, need care: drilling tile requires the right bit, slow speed, no hammer action, and a starting point that will not skate. Where possible we fix into the grout line or above the tile entirely, because a cracked tile is a much bigger repair than the blind was ever worth.
Cutting blinds to width
Many stock blinds can be cut down, and plenty of retailers will do it in store at the point of sale, which is the neatest route. Aluminium and faux wood slats generally cut well; some cellular and roller products do not and are made to size instead.
Cutting well means taking material from both ends equally so the mechanism stays centred, and deburring the slat edges afterwards. A blind cut only at one end has its controls off-centre and often binds. If you are buying stock blinds to cut, have the store do it against your measurements rather than trimming at home.
What this costs
$110 per window installed · $290 minimum
Measured, mounted and levelled. Motorised blinds start at $260 a window because of the power and pairing work. Hardware supplied by you or sourced at cost.
Materials are always separate from labour and passed on at cost. Quotes are free and written, and the full rate card is published rather than given out on request.
Common questions
Are corded blinds still legal?
Canada regulated hazardous cords on window coverings offered for sale, which is why new blinds are cordless or have cords that are short and inaccessible. That applies to what may be sold rather than retroactively to blinds already in your home — but if you have older corded blinds and young children, replacing them is genuinely worth doing.
Can blinds be fitted to a concrete surround?
Yes, with masonry anchors and a hammer drill, and it holds very well. The one caution is that there is no second chance at the position — a misplaced hole in concrete cannot be patched invisibly — so we mark and agree bracket positions with you before drilling anything.
Can blinds be cut down to fit?
Many stock blinds can, and having the retailer cut them against your measurements is the neatest route. Material must come off both ends equally so the mechanism stays centred, and the slat edges need deburring. Some cellular and roller products cannot be cut and are made to size instead.
