Window Curtain Installation in Vancouver

The most common curtain mistake costs nothing to avoid: hanging the rod just above the window, at exactly its width. Moving it higher and wider makes the window look considerably larger and lets the curtains clear the glass entirely when open.

Rod height and width placement

Hang high and wide. Mounting the rod well above the window frame — halfway to the ceiling, or at the ceiling in a room with standard height — draws the eye up and makes the window read as taller than it is. It is the cheapest visual improvement available in a room.

Extend the rod 150 to 250mm past the frame on each side so the curtains stack on the wall rather than over the glass when open. That gains you the full window and full daylight, where a rod cut to the window width leaves curtains permanently covering the edges of it.

Anchoring heavy rods in drywall

Curtains weigh more than people think, and the load is cantilevered out from the wall on a bracket, which multiplies the force at the fixing. This is why curtain rods pull out of walls — usually taking a chunk of drywall with them, at speed, months after installation.

Into a stud is ideal but studs rarely land where brackets need to go. Otherwise it needs proper heavy-duty toggles rated for the load, not the small plastic plugs supplied in the box. Full-length lined drapery on a wide window is heavy enough that we would always look for framing or install blocking rather than trusting hollow-wall anchors alone.

Ceiling-mounted tracks

Fixing to the ceiling gives the maximum height effect and a very clean line, with fabric running floor to ceiling. It also solves the case where there is genuinely no wall space above the window, which is common in condos with windows tight to the ceiling.

Ceiling fixing needs joists or proper blocking, and joist direction determines where brackets can go — if the joists run parallel to the window, blocking may be needed. In a concrete condo ceiling, it is masonry anchors, which hold well but require agreeing positions before drilling.

Hem length and floor clearance

Three conventions. Just clearing the floor by around 10mm is the tidiest and works everywhere, particularly with pets, children or radiators below. Kissing the floor is the most tailored look and demands accurate measurement, since a centimetre out is visible.

Puddling, with extra fabric pooling on the floor, is a deliberately traditional look that collects dust and is impractical anywhere with traffic. Measure from the rod position rather than the window, and note that lined fabric may relax and drop slightly after hanging — which is a reason to hang before final hemming where possible.

What this costs

$110 per window installed · $290 minimum

Measured, mounted and levelled. Motorised blinds start at $260 a window because of the power and pairing work. Hardware supplied by you or sourced at cost.

Materials are always separate from labour and passed on at cost. Quotes are free and written, and the full rate card is published rather than given out on request.

Common questions

How high should a curtain rod go?

Higher than instinct suggests — well above the frame, halfway to the ceiling or at the ceiling in a standard-height room. It makes the window read as taller and the room as larger. Extend it 150 to 250mm past each side too, so curtains stack on the wall rather than covering the glass when open.

Will heavy curtains pull out of drywall?

They will if fixed with the plugs supplied in the box. The bracket cantilevers the weight out from the wall, which multiplies the force at the fixing. Into a stud is ideal; otherwise it needs heavy-duty toggles rated for the load. For full-length lined drapery we look for framing or install blocking rather than trusting anchors.

Should curtains touch the floor?

Clearing by about 10mm is tidiest and most practical, especially with pets, children or a radiator below. Kissing the floor is the most tailored look and needs accurate measurement — a centimetre out shows. Puddled fabric is a traditional look that collects dust. Measure from the rod, not the window.
