Window Shade Installation in Vancouver

Shades are a single piece of fabric rather than slats, which makes them cleaner-looking and gives them one characteristic problem: light does not come through the fabric, it comes around the edges. Managing that gap is most of what separates a good bedroom installation from a frustrating one.

Roller vs. cellular shades

Roller shades are a single fabric on a tube — simple, inexpensive, and available from sheer through to full blackout. They stack into a small roll at the top and suit contemporary interiors.

Cellular shades are constructed as honeycomb cells that trap a layer of air, which gives them genuine insulating value. In a condo with large single-glazed windows or in an older house, that is a real difference in comfort near the window rather than a marketing claim. They cost more and stack into a slightly deeper bundle at the top.

Blackout layering for bedrooms

A blackout fabric on an inside-mounted shade still leaves a visible outline of light around all four edges, and in a bedroom that is exactly what wakes people early in June. The fabric being opaque is not the issue; the gap is.

Three fixes, in order of effectiveness: outside mount with generous overlap, which is simplest and works; side channels that capture the fabric edges, which is the true blackout solution; or an inside-mounted shade combined with curtains over the top. For anyone working nights or a baby's room, side channels are worth the extra.

Motorised shades and power

Battery-powered motors are the practical retrofit: no wiring, rechargeable packs lasting months to a year, and they can be added to almost any window. The cost is remembering to recharge them, which people underestimate across a whole house of shades.

Hardwired motors never need charging and need power at the window, which is electrical work for a licensed subcontractor and much easier during a renovation than after. Solar top-up panels sit between the two and work reasonably on a bright elevation — less so on a north face through a Vancouver winter.

Light gap management

Gaps appear in three places: the sides, the top where the roller sits away from the recess, and the bottom where the fabric meets the sill. The top gap is the one people forget, and a fascia or valance closes it neatly.

On an outside mount, more overlap is simply better — 75mm or more each side and above makes a visible difference. Also consider the fabric roll direction: a standard roll drops the fabric away from the window, while a reverse roll runs it closer to the glass, closing the side gaps and clearing handles that project into the recess.

What this costs

$110 per window installed · $290 minimum

Measured, mounted and levelled. Motorised blinds start at $260 a window because of the power and pairing work. Hardware supplied by you or sourced at cost.

Materials are always separate from labour and passed on at cost. Quotes are free and written, and the full rate card is published rather than given out on request.

Common questions

How do I stop light leaking around the edges?

Accept that inside-mounted blackout fabric will always outline in light, then fix the gap rather than the fabric. Outside mount with 75mm or more overlap is the simple answer; side channels that capture the fabric edges are the true blackout solution. A fascia closes the top gap, which people usually forget.

Do motorised shades need wiring?

Not necessarily. Battery motors retrofit to almost any window with no wiring and last months to a year per charge — the tradeoff is remembering to recharge them across a whole house. Hardwired motors never need charging but need power at the window, which is electrical work and far easier during a renovation.

Are cellular shades worth it for insulation?

In the right window, yes — the honeycomb cells trap air and make a genuine difference to comfort near large or single-glazed windows, which is a real effect rather than a marketing claim. On a small, well-insulated modern window the benefit is much less noticeable and a roller shade is the better value.
